things to do instead of doomscrolling
A few weeks ago I decided to challenge myself to spend less time online, less time on social media more specifically. I did not think it would be such a big challenge. It has been such a transition, I don't like to think neither to admit it, but I was addicted to social media. I have been consuming so much content, I have been spending so much time online. My phone has been filling more gaps than I wish it would, so I decided to make a change. I decided to start a digital detox. I decided to increase my time offline.
Here are a few things you can do instead of doomscrolling:
1. Be bored. I am not even joking. We have spend so much of our time on our phones we don't even remember what it is to be bored. We don't wait in lines anymore. We just grab our phones and distract ourselves from boredom. I don't mean that you have to embrace a boring life, just that sometimes we have to challenge ourselves not to grab our phones while waiting, for example. This is probably the hardest one to execute. Try to be bored for 5 minutes.
2. Find a quiet hobby that you like. Writing, Journaling, Reading, Painting, Drawing, Photographing, Filming, Gardening. Just try to be quiet, to listen to your own voice. This is really good to practice your presence. Be present. Be attentive to what your are doing. Avoid multi-tasking.
3. Not so quiet hobby. Something that can be done with movement, with friends, outside. Go for a walk, go to the gym, exercise, try yoga, dance classes, lifting weights, surfing.
4. Study something. It can be the most useless thing you could learn. Just find something you are interested and try to learn a new thing about it. Exercise your brain. Exercise your memory. Read an article. It does not have to be related to work or to your studies. It can be a new recipe you want to try, a new cooking method, history of the art or dancing.
5. Clean your place. A tidy home helps a tidy mind. It is hard to be at peace when your bedroom, your home screams mess. Throw away stuff you do not use. Keep only what's helping you.
6. Give. Help others. With your time, with your money, with your belonging. Whatever is on your reach. Try helping someone different. Talk to a stranger, show gratitute, smile, make yourself available to listen.
These are some activities you can do instead of scrolling on your phone. They are going to help you live a happier life. Having a play time is really important to sustain your mental health and to enjoy life.
I know these might be generalistic activities. I am happy to bring some more in case you need some more ideas :)
Love you all. Stay safe.
